Boyer - Supplemental Instructions![]()
SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR BOYER BRANSDEN ELECTRONIC IGNITION TYPE 3 FOR DOMINATOR AND COMMANDO
If you have a mag replacement unit, a Dominator manufactured in 1967 or later, or a 1968/1969 Commando, with points located in the canister behind the barrels, pay no attention to step 6 in the Boyer instructions. Instead, set the engine at 31 degrees before top dead centre and install the rotor loosely in position with the stator plate over it. Line up the magnet on one side of the rotor with the hole marked “Clockwise Timing” or “C.W. Timing” on the back of the stator plate (i.e. 6 o’clock hole). Note the position of the rotor and tighten it down.
Pay no attention to step 9 in the Boyer instructions.
If you have a mag replacement unit, a Dominator manufactured in 1967 or later, or a 1968/1969 Commando, with points located in the canister behind the barrels, install the transistor box with the two short wires on the right side of the bike towards the rear.
If after installing the new Boyer correctly, your machine kicks back and/or backfires, pull of the stator plate and inspect the lumps of solder on the back. If any of the lumps look freshly nicked, they are probably making contact with the rotor as it rotates. Remove enough solder until nothing comes into contact with these soldered connections.
Note: with a mag replacement unit, a Dominator manufactured in 1967 or later, or a 1968/1969 Commando, the magnetic rotor rotates clockwise, therefore you should:
Rotate the plate clockwise to retard the ignition
Rotate the plate anti-clockwise to advance the ignition
Rotate the rotor clockwise to advance the ignition
Rotate the rotor anti-clockwise to retard the ignition
Commandos manufactured in 1970 or later, the rotor spins anti clockwise, so the reverse of everything above concerning rotation is true.
Safe Riding.
